MAGNOLIAS IN THE MOONLIGHT

183cm x 122cm

Acrylic & Oil Pastel on Canvas

Framed in Hand-Stained Tasmanian Oak

Painted in Australian artist Rikki Day's Northern Rivers Studio.

THE MEANING BEHIND THE WORK:

Some things reveal themselves most beautifully in the quiet.

The magnolia has always felt timeless to me. Elegant but strong. Soft yet enduring. A flower that asks nothing of us except that we slow down long enough to appreciate it.

"Magnolias in the Moonlight" was inspired by those moments where the world seems to soften. The scent of flowers carried on cool evening air. The stillness that arrives after a busy day. The feeling of standing beneath the night sky and realising there is nowhere else you need to be.

Created as part of my latest collection exploring humanity, presence and the joy of real life, this work is a reminder that beauty often asks us to slow down rather than speed up. To notice rather than consume. To experience rather than scroll.

Painted with expressive brushwork, layered colour and visible hand-made marks, the piece embraces the beauty of the hand. I wanted the work to feel alive, joyful and unmistakably human — carrying a sense of warmth and presence into the home it inhabits.

LIVING WITH THE WORK

At 183cm x 122cm, Magnolias in the Moonlight is designed to become a statement within a space.

The warm earth tones, deep browns and creamy magnolia petals create a sense of quiet luxury. As the light changes throughout the day, the painting reveals new subtleties and depth, rewarding slow observation and creating an atmosphere of calm sophistication.

FRAMING & PRESENTATION

The frame is not an afterthought — it is an extension of the artwork itself.

Unable to find a commercial framing finish that I felt truly complemented the tones within this collection, I sourced a beautiful Japanese brown stain and hand-finished each Tasmanian Oak frame in my studio. The deep brown finish was carefully chosen to elevate the artwork while maintaining a sense of warmth and timelessness.

Each frame carries subtle variations from the hand-finishing process, adding another layer of individuality to an already one-of-a-kind piece.
